How does an avalanche airbag work

Avalanche airbags are being claimed to highly increase the chances of survival when caught up in an avalanche. Theory says that bigger objects end up on the surface after an avalanche, and this is precisely what these new pieces of ski safety equipment are designed for, to make skiers "a bigger object".
